BUTLER PLACE HISTORIC DISTRICT
The Butler Place Historic District in Fort Worth, Texas, is a significant landmark in the city's social and architectural history. Developed between 1939 and 1940 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal public housing initiative, Butler Place provided affordable housing for African American families during an era of racial segregation. Named in honor of Henry H. Butler—Fort Worth's first African American public school teacher—the neighborhood became a close-knit community that fostered generations of families and cultural heritage.
Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, the district is valued for both its Colonial Revival and Modern architectural styles and its role in the history of public housing and African American life in Fort Worth.
